Princeton toxic foundered in
Spring of 2004 due to vaccinations. He was given all of his
vaccinations at the same time, including Rhino, West Nile,
and several more. Princeton’s feet were already unhealthy
due to years of shoeings, which resulted in a reduced blood
supply to the foot. The vaccinations where the last straw
that pushed his body over the edge, resulting in founder.
Princeton foundered primarily, but as is the often the case,
became laminitic in the hind feet as well, meaning rotation
was limited to the front feet while the back feet simply became
inflamed.
Due to budget constraints of
a young family, no x-rays were taken in the early stages.
Further follow-up x-rays are expected later this year.
As of this writing, March 2005,
Princeton is now ready for light duty, such as round pen work.
He is progressing very well. Full recovery is expected by
mid to late summer.
Suggestions to avoid such founder
are, if you must vaccinate, break up the vaccines. Give one
or two per week. Provide adequate time out of shoes to allow
the inner hoof to repair and become stronger.
